Matcha Magic

Updated: Nov 29, 2023

If you haven't heard of matcha you've surely heard of green tea 🌿 Matcha is green tea but in its most raw, potent form. Instead of the green tea leaves in a steeping bag the leaves are ground up into a very fine, beautiful, vibrant green powder that has a slightly sweet, smooth earthy flavor.

The leaves are specifically shade grown and have been used as a sacred part of ceremonies in east Asia for centuries. Matcha is also a staple in traditional Chinese medicine and for good reason! TCM is considered an alternative form of medicine based on the fact that the body has the ability to heal itself given the right foods, environment, and lifestyle choices.

Fortunately matcha is readily available to the world and with its powerful health and healing benefits it’s a no-brainer to incorporate it into your lifestyle. Don't just take my word for it though here’s why matcha is magical…

Superfood Status

There is no other food out there that contains more antioxidants than matcha. The little green leaf contains a special, potent class of antioxidants called catechins, which is not found in any other foods.

Here comes more magic, there's a specific catechin called EGCg (epigallocatechin gallate) that makes up 60% of all of the catechins found in matcha that has powerful cancer fighting properties. EGCg along with the rest of the catechins and other antioxidants counteract harmful free radicals from pollution, radiation, chemicals, heavy metals, and poor lifestyle choices that cause dis-ease and cellular damage, aka cancer.

All of these antioxidants also fight against premature aging, help clear skin and give you that glow from within!

Chock Full Of Nutrients

Most of us do not get the recommended daily amount of fruits and vegetables which means we are not consuming nearly enough antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.

A good rule of thumb is to eat about five different plants per day and around 30 different plants per week. This allows you to get a variety of nutrients to feed cells and healthy gut microbiomes. Plants include grains, nuts, seeds, beans, fruits, and veggies.

Even if you do achieve this, and I strongly encourage that you do, matcha is still an amazing addition to anyone's lifestyle. An extra boost of nutrients and those special antioxidants is only going to elevate overall health and wellness. A clean, nourishing diet should still be number one priority.

Matcha contains: Vitamin A, B-Complex Vitamins (B1 thiamine, B2 riboflavin, B3 niacin, B6 pyridoxine), Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin K, Zinc, Manganese, Potassium, Magnesium, Calcium, Phosphorous, Sodium, Chromium, Copper, and don't forget about those special antioxidants!

Supports Metabolism

Besides being super nutrient dense matcha is known for boosting metabolism and can aid in burning fat. When taken on a daily basis it can help the body burn up to four times more calories throughout the day and does not put unnecessary stress on the body that supplements like fat burners do. Did I mention it is basically calorie free, containing about 3 calories per gram.

I’m not all about weight loss, I'm about being the healthiest version of ourselves. Consuming matcha most likely isn't going to make anyone drop weight. It supports a healthy metabolism, meaning it supports thyroid function and hormone balance, something that is essential to proper health.

Calm Caffeine

If you like an extra boost of energy without the jitters and crash, then matcha is the drink for you! It contains caffeine, providing energy but also contains L-Theanine, a rare amino acid that promotes relaxation. So you get the best of both worlds, a gentle boost of energy without raising the heart rate or blood pressure plus. L-Theanine also boosts brain function and aids with memory, focus, and learning. Matcha can also help protect the brain from premature aging and diseases like dementia and alzheimers.

Clean Green

Matcha is loaded with chlorophyll, the beautiful pigment present in all green plants. This pigment naturally cleanses the body of harmful elements. It helps the body with its natural detoxification processes and promotes better elimination of chemicals, toxins, and heavy metals. This also helps protect the detoxification organs like the liver, kidneys, and lymphatic system.

Instead of doing all of those fancy cleanses and buying detox pills, all you need is matcha 🌿

The Grades

Now that you know matcha is something that your body will benefit from, you need to know the different grades of matcha.

Ceremonial grade matcha is the highest quality matcha and will be a lovely vibrant green color. This is the matcha that you want to use, it’s high quality offers the most health benefits and a much better taste.

The lowest grade of matcha is culinary grade which has gone through more processing and may have been grown in less than perfect conditions. This grade of matcha is a dull green color and unfortunately is what is typically used at cafes and restaurants because it is cheaper.

There are some grades in between, but to ensure you're consuming the most nutritious and beneficial matcha opt for organic, ceremonial grade matcha. I buy mine from a company called Jade Leaf Matcha. I've been ordering my matcha from them for a while now and it’s always top notch! Smooth, creamy, tasty, and organic! I'm going to leave the link right below so you can check it out for yourself!

There are endless ways to add matcha into your lifestyle. My go to is adding it into my protein shake or making an almond milk matcha latte with raw honey. Make sure to keep it refrigerated in a concealed tin, jar, or bag where it will not be exposed to any light. Light will cause matcha to turn gray and spoil.

Matcha For Self Love

I hope you're excited now to add matcha into your diet! It really is one of the best things you can do for yourself, overall wellbeing, and longevity. It’s a small investment considering all of the health benefits it provides and you are worth investing into. We only get this one body and we need to do all that we can to keep it healthy so that we can live happy, fulfilling lives.

Take your health to the next level! Be kind and make sure to tell your family and friends about the magic of matcha 💚🌿🍵

Wishing you a beautiful day 🌿

Much Love,

Bellamy Ryder
