Sea Moss Magic
Updated: 4 hours ago
Sea moss, also referred to as Irish Moss, is a broadened name given to a family of red algae found in abundance in warm and cold water oceans across the globe. It also goes by the names of Gracilaria and Chondrus Crispus, just to get a little technical with you. Sea moss has been taking the health industry by storm lately and for very good reason.
If you haven't heard of sea moss, you're probably thinking, are people really out here eating sea moss? Yes, that is correct. This type of sea moss is made into a gel that can easily be added into smoothies and shakes or made into capsule form for more convenient consumption. You can even make sea moss gel at home yourself! You might also be wondering why the heck someone would want to ingest sea moss gel. Once I tell you, you’ll want to too! 🌊
The Most Complete Superfood On Earth
This is the most amazing thing about sea moss, that it is the most complete superfood found on earth. It contains 92 of the 102 essential vitamins and minerals to humans. If that doesn't get you excited I don't know what will!
Just 1-2 tablespoons of sea moss gel per day will give you a serious boost of the nutrients that your body needs in order to survive. It’s no secret that most of the human population does not get nearly enough of the essential nutrients in order to sustain a truly thriving body and healthy life. This is simply due to the major lack of plants including fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds, oats, and grains in the diet and wayyy too much animal meats, saturated fats, refined sugar, packaged, processed, and fast food. This has become the typical diet especially in the United States.
I am not advising you to buy sea moss to add it into your diet to replace fruits, veggies and other plants! Sea moss is a great addition to a healthy, wholesome, clean diet but you cannot rely on sea moss alone to get your daily amounts of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants (micronutrients). Sea moss paired with an unhealthy diet is extremely counterproductive. Those who have an unhealthy diet don’t possess the ability to absorb much nutrients due to cellular damage and backup. Sea moss paired with a healthy diet full of beautiful plants will act as a nutrient bullet causing your beautiful body to thrive even more like it’s meant to!
The Micronutrients
So what exactly does sea moss have to offer? Sea moss is a natural source of:
Iodine - reduces inflammation in the body, aids in the balance of thyroid hormones, and helps the body to produce collagen which fights against aging.
Potassium chloride - amazing for respiratory health and aids in dissolving phlegm. Very beneficial to those who have asthma like myself, I can say I have noticed an improvement in my symptoms.
Omega 3 fatty acids - an essential fat that most do not get enough of which causes inflammation.
Zinc - boosts immunity, reduces inflammation, speeds up the healing process. Essential for immune function, protein and DNA synthesis, and growth and development.
Phosphorus - essential for teeth health, removing waste from the kidneys, promotes a healthy nervous system, synthesizing both DNA and RNA, and healthy muscle contractions.
Potassium - essential in maintaining proper hydration and sodium balance, muscle contractions and healthy nervous system signals. Can protect against kidney stones and disease, osteoporosis, and maintain a normal blood pressure.
Bromine - responsible for tissue production, enzyme synthesis and kidney health.
Calcium - building blocks of strong bones, the heart, muscles and nervous system all need sufficient calcium in order to function properly. It also releases and regulates hormones and circulates blood.
Boron - prevents muscle cramps, yeast infections, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis. Can also help carry other minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus.
Iron - essential for growth and development as well as tissue and cell regeneration. Also essential for creating hemoglobin which is what carries oxygen from the lungs to all parts of the body. It also regulates body temperature, energy and focus levels, and gastrointestinal processes.
Beta carotene - converts into vitamin A which is essential for healthy skin, healthy functioning eyes and vision, our cells mucus membrane health, and immune system health.
Pectin - a jelly-like fiber that is amazing for gut health. It also can reduce high cholesterol, high triglycerides, and heartburn.
Selenium - an antioxidant important in maintaining a healthy immune system. It lowers oxidative stress on the body which reduces inflammation and boosts immunity. Can also aid in the prevention of cancer.
Manganese - a trace mineral that is found in the bones and organs such as kidneys, pancreas, and liver (our detoxing organ). It’s responsible for creating connective tissues, blood clotting efficiency, and sex hormone production.
Magnesium - responsible for functions such as gene maintenance, muscle contractions and movements, energy levels, protein synthesis, and nervous system regulation. It also aids in fighting depression, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, migraines, pms symptoms, and is powerful at fighting inflammation.
Folate - which is B-9 is essential in red blood cell formation as well as cellular function and health. It is widely used for pregnant women to aid in the development of the fetus’s brain, skull, and spinal cord, reducing potential developmental issues. It can also help to alleviate stress, anxiety, and low energy symptoms.
Copper - aids in production of red blood cells and collagen, nervous system health, immune system support, protects cells from damage, aids in the absorption of iron, and aids in heart health.
Sulfur - builds and restores DNA and protects cells from damage from free radicals and improper regeneration which results in disease including cancer. It boosts metabolism and promotes healthy hair, skin, ligaments, and tendons.
Laminarin - eases constipation, aids in weight loss, reduces blood pressure, can aid in cancer prevention, improves cardiovascular health.
Nitrogen - essential for proper digestion, cell and tissue repair and replacement including for your hair, skin, nails, blood, muscles, and DNA.
Vitamins A - important in developing and maintaining healthy eye vision, immune system support, and reproductive health. Also supports normal function of the heart, lunges, and kidneys.
Vitamin B complex - aids in preventing infections and supports muscle tone, the nervous system, brain function, cellular health, cardiovascular health, proper digestion, hormone and cholesterol production, energy levels, red blood cell growth, and appetite.
Vitamin C - an antioxidant that fights free radicals in the body, supports immune system health, maintains healthy skin, blood vessels, bones, and cartilage.
Vitamin D - helps to regulate calcium and phosphate in the body and is needed in order to develop and maintain strong, healthy bones, heath, and muscles.
Vitamin E - keeps the immune system strong and healthy, efficient at fighting off bacteria and viruses. It helps the body utilize vitamin K, helps form red blood cells, and helps to keep blood vessels dilated so clotting doesn't happen from within causing health issues.
Vitamin K - maintains bone health, aids in healthy blood clotting for when you get an open wound that's bleeding, and helps wounds heal efficiently.
Protein - essential for life and the building blocks of everything within our bodies. Protein is a macronutrient but it’s so essential to us I wanted to include it in this section.
What It Does For The Body
Since sea moss is a natural source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants the body (your cells) is able to absorb and utilize them more efficiently. Man made micronutrients (from supplement pills, capsules, or the dreaded gummy's) compete in the body with the natural micronutrients from plants, high quality meats, and fats. This can actually cause nutrients to not be absorbed.
Sea moss is super effective at decreasing inflammation within the body which is the root cause of most diseases which can be prevented, even autoimmune, “age related”, and hereditary diseases.
It is a powerhouse remedy for those with respiratory issues like asthma as it naturally dissolves built up phlegm in the mucus membranes.
The magical algae plant promotes healthy, clear, hydrated, youthful skin with its naturally occurring iodine which helps your body make more of its own collagen and fights against signs of aging. You can save yourself some money and ditch the man made collagen powder supplements that most likely contain unwanted and unnecessary ingredients. You wont need it when your body is working for you, not against you.
Give your thyroid health a boost as well. Sea moss helps to balance healthy thyroid hormone production which helps produce healthy inflammatory responses in the body. Ideal for those who have both an under-active thyroid (hypothyroidism) and overactive thyroid (hypothyroidism).
Sea moss is amazing for creating a stronger immune system as it supports healthy microbial and viral responses within the body. This means that it is a machine at fighting off bacteria, viruses, and even an overproduction of yeast. You wont need to drink those gross, artificially flavored vitamin C packets when you're getting so much from sea moss.
My favorite benefit is that it is super effective at drawing out heavy metals and pollutants from the body. We all have some degree of heavy metal poisoning especially if you drink bottled or unfiltered water, eat a lot of inorganic fish and non grass fed meats, eat lots of packaged, processed, and fast food, and live in an area where there is heavy air pollution. Heavy metals have no place in our bodies. Truth be told, I went through some mild detox symptoms when I began consuming sea moss everyday and I feel so much better, more energized, and lighter for it.
Ways To Incorporate
There are a few ways to incorporate sea moss into your daily diet. One thing to mention is that you must make sure you drink it with at least 16 ounces of fluid as it is extremely nutrient dense. If you were to eat it on its own, which is unpleasant, your body wouldn't be able to absorb all of the nutrients. It must have enough carrying fluid for the body to effectively absorb and utilize all of those beautiful nutrients.
Add it into your green juices. Lots of people juice, if you are one of them or you want to start this is a great way to add an extra boost of nutrients to your juices. Simply make your juices as you would, I love to make mine with a variety of greens, garlic, celery, and an orange, then mix or shake in 1-2 tablespoons of sea moss.
Add it to protein shakes. If you drink a protein shake on the daily it's a perfect opportunity to get some sea moss in. I recommend using a high quality plant protein that is naturally flavored or a plain brown rice protein (link below) mixed with a bit of raw honey or pure maple syrup for wholesome sweetness along with a plant milk of your choice.

Make a fruit and veggie smoothie. Everyone loves smoothies and it's a great way to get in fruits and veggies. It’s also a great alternative to juicing if you're not interested in buying a juicer or wanting to consume the whole plant vs. just the juice. Consuming whole fruits and veggies in a smoothie has loads of benefits. Do make sure to add in veggies to balance out the sugar content from the fruits. Fruits are amazing for us but even too much sugar from fruit can dump on the liver. Scoop in a tablespoon of sea moss and you have a superfood dream in a cup!
Get The Most From Your Moss
As I mentioned earlier, sea moss is the most beneficial way to add in a major boost of micronutrients as it is the most complete superfood but we can't rely on it alone. It simply isn't enough if you're not eating plenty of other fruits and veggies. I’m not recommending going vegan or even vegetarian BUT a plant based diet is highly recommended. Plants allow our bodies to do what they were meant to do. Absorb nutrients and utilize them to repair and restore our bodies on a cellular level. This occurs 24/7.
Our beautiful bodies are meant to consume foods that are close to the earth. We are not meant to eat any of the garbage that is put into most of our foods like chemicals, preservatives, modified soy, vegetable oils, refined sugar, artificial flavors, low quality salt, and fillers. This destroys our health on a cellular level. When that happens, our cells begin to lose the ability to absorb nutrients causing the body to create diseases including autoimmune disorders, hereditary diseases, and “age related diseases”. All of these can be prevented with a good clean diet full of nutrients.
I highly recommend that when and if you decide sea moss is something for you to adopt a wholesome plant based diet and start to eliminate packaged, processed, refined sugar, and fast food. This way your cellular health will improve and you will have the ability to absorb and utilize all of the nutrients. Otherwise it will be a complete waste of money as it is an investment into your health and longevity.
